How Zurich has to change its roads to have more e-bikes than cars
What happens when cities gear their road space primarily to the needs of cyclists and e-bikers? On a new popular-science website, ETH researchers from the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering use examples from the city of Zurich to show what such an “E-Bike City” could one day look like.
D-BAUG @Scientifica2023
Scientifica, the science festival organised by ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, takes place from 28 August to 3 September 2023. This year's theme is "What holds the world together". D-BAUG is taking part with twelve exciting contributions, including a discussion on Zurich as E-Bike City, a film screening, several exhibitions, short lectures and guided tours as well as a workshop.
Now online: Recordings of the E-Bike City colloquium
On 8 June 2023 not only preliminary results have been presented, but participants were also actively involved in shaping the research questions from the D-BAUG lighthouse project "E-Bike City" conducted by its seven research groups. With various presentations and workshops, the researchers, experts and stakeholders deepened their research topics and methods. About 80 participants contributed to a successful event. The recordings are now online.
It starts with a glance. How ETH researchers contribute to sustainable campus mobility
They come to ETH Zurich almost daily by bike or e-bike. Three D-BAUG transport researchers are investigating how an e-bike-friendly city works. They are also committed to a safe, sustainable, and CO2-reducing campus mobility at ETH Zurich.
Missed the E-Bike City Kick-off? No worries!
On 23 November 2022, the Kick-off Symposium dedicated to the D-BAUG lighthouse project "E-Bike City" took place. More than 150 participants attended the event and contributed to a lively discussion following the input talks by speakers from practice and research. We are delighted to share with you the video recordings of the talks and discussion.
E-Bike City: Designing sustainable streets
What if 50 percent of existing urban road space was allocated to e-bikes and the slow modes? How would this change our daily lives? How many CO2 emissions could this save? These questions are at the core of the D-BAUG lighthouse project "E-Bike City". Seven research groups will join forces to explore the effects of an urban future giving absolute priority to cycling, micromobility and public transport. Join the kick-off event on 23 November 2022!
“It’s important to factor in how people feel”
The new Center for Sustainable Future Mobility (CSFM) will launch on 6 May 2022 with a kickoff symposium at ETH Zurich. Kay Axhausen, Professor of Traffic and Transport Planning at D-BAUG, will serve as the inaugural CSFM director. In a conversation with ETH News, he shares his view of the challenges ahead for transport and mobility research.
How micromobility affects the climate
Shared e-scooters and e-bikes transport the image of a climate-friendly mobility solution. D-BAUG researchers have now shown that shared micromobility solutions in Zurich emit more CO2 emissions than the alternatives they replace.
