Assessment of environmental impacts of e-bike mobility scenarios

Sub project F

Description

This subproject aims to assess the environmental benefits and impacts of the future e-bike-city using life cycle assessments (LCA). Scenario information about changes in infrastructure, number and technology of vehicles (private, shared and public), as well as distances driven by each vehicle type will come from the other subprojects. This information will be coupled with existing and newly established life-cycle inventory data to assess and compare the environmental performance (and “desirability”) of all scenarios. LCA data about the construction and operation of infrastructure, various types of vehicles, fuels and electricity mixes already exist, but technology development will need to be forecast within this project to assess future scenarios.

A particular data gap to close, and hence a focus here, are the batteries needed for future e-mobility. In particular, the demand of metals used for Li-ion batteries is expected to significantly increase in the future. Therefore, it is essential to investigate environmental impacts related to metals which are the basis for Li-ion batteries. The focus will be on lithium and cobalt and their associated technologies.
